Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder that may affect many tissues and organs, but principally attacks flexible (synovial) joints. It causes inflammation of the tissues around the joints leading to joint swelling, stiffness and pain.

The persistent inflammation of the synovial membrane causes bone damage by cartilage destruction and small erosions start to appear.

Being progressive in nature, in the long term, rheumatoid arthritis can lead to joint destruction, severe disability and loss of mobility.

Causes

 Symptoms 

-The disease first attacks peripheral joints like the proximal interphalangeal joints (PIP) and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints of the hands, wrists, shoulders, elbows, knees, ankles, and metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints of the feet.

Treatments

-Physical therapy, ortho care, occupational therapy and nutritional therapy are used, but these do not stop the progression of joint destruction.
